Overflowing with life and vitality, your worldly hostess Lee circulates amongst the guests, warming their hearts with genuine friendship. Her husband Romy cheerfully prepares the evening meal in the open kitchen, exercising his considerable culinary skills with the able assistance of their grown children and smiling staff. Set on a hillside amidst working coffee plantations, it is positioned on the edge of a forested canyon that falls away to the Colorado River below. Being at a high altitude, the tropic air is cooled to a most pleasant temperature, maintained by a constant cooling breeze embracing you during the day. The hotel provides magnificent rural vistas to the relaxing guest. Some of the best food available in the country is served in casual elegant style on the terraces below the hotel, where the dinner or breakfast guest will savour the fine aromas emanating from the grill. Your hosts also have a gourmet restaurant nearby, so it is no wonder! Lee the matchmaker will seat you with compatible travelers who will be happy to compare notes on their Costa Rica experiences, and invariably El Cafetal gets top marks amongst other hotels tried in Costa Rica! The Inn is set well back from the country road and the lounge, deck, and pool areas are totally private and consequently very relaxing. Rooms vary in style but all share rich native wood trim and cabinetry and of course, great views. This is a wonderful place to start (or end) your Costa Rican vacation. It is the same 20 minutes distant from the airport as is the city, but in the opposite direction. Once there you will wonder why you would ever want to see a city again. This area was declared to have the best climate in the world because of the unique micro-climate that provides just enough rain and the most sunny hours in the year. At night you will see the stars above and the city lights in the Central Valley below. El Cafetal is a good place to base yourself while taking various day-trip tours throughout this small country. A rental car can be arranged by the hotel and delivered to the hotel at minimal cost. Various tours are available or you can guide yourself on local walks and easy hikes through nearby forest where monkeys may be seen during their daily transits. Cycling and horseback riding are also available and it is only 1 hour’s drive to beaches or golf courses. Notes The Atenas area has been named as having one of the best climates in the world - tropical and yet high enough for cool evenings and occasional rain showers, even during the dry season, to keep the flowers in bloom. It is an excellent alternative to city accommodation. Driving distance to airport 20 min. To San Jose city 45 min. To nearest beach 35 min. To volcanos, Carara Reserve, or Los Angeles cloud forest 1 hour. To nearest restaurant 2 min. To Atenas town, 10 min.
