Hotel Fleur de Lys is a Victorian mansion in the heart of San Jose that has been recently converted to a 30 room hotel by its Swiss owners. As soon as you get sight of the exterior colour scheme, you know you are in for a unique experience. This conversion and renovation has been very well done. With a mix of European and Spanish colonial architecture, the hotel interior displays a rich variety of colour and texture. Different sections of the building were constructed at different times, creating a somewhat confusing layout. Corridors and stairways run in various directions to different levels seemingly at random, but the result is really quite charming. You will find high ceilings and small sky-lit courtyards, wood-paneled hallways and broad staircases, splashes of colour and fine original works of art – a very interesting place indeed. A gallery of the best works doubles as a breakfast and dining area. The terrace overlooking the road is a pleasant spot to enjoy refreshment at the end of the day, and the English-style enclosed bar offers a friendly happy hour as the evening chill descends at the end of your busy day. There is a great variety of room styles, including one suite with a bright skylight illuminating the Jacuzzi. Rooms are spacious and well-appointed, and the artwork displayed is worth the price of admission alone. A dedicated internet room is available to guests, and the small gift shop and tour office should satisfy most of the adventuring traveler's needs.
