Rich in cultural accoutrements, Hotel Don Carlos is a delight, particularly for those with an eye for art. Don Carlos Balser, the original patriarch of this family-owned and run hotel in the heart of San Jose, was an acclaimed archeologist and authority on pre-Columbian art even as he was establishing the first major hotel in Central America. Well-staffed and maintained, the present hotel is an assembly of three homes connected by courtyards and passages that display ancient and contemporary sculpture, mosaic, and painting. In a country not known for its unique cultural expression, this is very much a gallery-hotel that invites you to pause on your way to breakfast, or to your room after an evening out, to savour the paintings and sculpture on display. Classic traditional painted oxcart wheels now serve as tables on which a drink or coffee may be enjoyed, and the small pool and waterfall inset in the stone deck area also serve as a pleasant refuge during a warm afternoon. The rooms are spacious, comfortable, and quiet and each one displays a unique decor. Breakfast is served in the covered courtyard to hotel guests only, and the restaurant opens to the public for lunch and dinner, so you will have an opportunity to rub shoulders with some discerning locals. The hotel is a multi-level maze with a rather fun feel to it, while also retaining a taste of Spanish-Colonial formality. You're not in Kansas anymore, Toto!
