A perfect introduction to this lovely country, Hotel 1492 soothes the weary traveler and makes him feel immediately "at home". This family-owned 10-room hotel is a tranquil refuge from the busy city, reputedly the quietest in San Jose, and a perfect place to wash air travel from your mind. The inner enclosed courtyard displays paintings and ceramics by the well-known Costa Rican artist Amalia Jimenez Volio, matriarch of the owner’s family, providing a most pleasant environment for planning your Costa Rican adventures and for exchanging experiences with fellow travelers. The lobby is more like a living room, tastefully decorated with tile, flowers, murals, tapestries and paintings. The small garden displays birds of paradise, palms, torches, a bit of grass, and is generally just how you might plant your garden if you had this cool but tropical climate. The friendly and helpful staff can arrange for your car to be delivered to the hotel, and a more pleasant scene for filling out the rental paperwork could not be imagined. The sheltered breakfast area provides a view of the walled garden which presents a typical array of tropical flowers, banana trees, birds of paradise, and an assortment of palms as you enjoy a cheerfully-presented traditional breakfast of fresh fruit, beans, eggs, toast and local coffee. You are welcome to use the "honour bar" fridge at any time, with the proviso that, for the benefit of other guests, you only display quiet satisfaction of your good fortune during the evenings.

Notes Hotel 1492 (formerly the Jade y Oro) is located in a neighbourhood safe for walking yet reasonably close to the city centre. It is a short walk to shops, and only 8 blocks to downtown. There is free parking at the Hotel 1492, which is reputedly the quietest hotel in San Jose. Please note that the altitude of San Jose creates a cooler climate than the coast, and air conditioning is not required.

If cancelled less than 7 nights prior to reservation, 50% of first night will be charged. If cancelled less than 2 days before day of reservation or no-show, full amount of stay will be charged.
