It is sometimes a difficult road that leads to pleasurable experience - that's why they call it "rewarding". It is a bumpy road leading up the western slopes of the Volcan Rincon de la Vieja from the coastal plain around Liberia, but only the last 30 minutes are really challenging. A 4WD vehicle will make it fun, and a ride in a taxi-bus will make it carefree. The vegetation subtly alters as you gain altitude and pass through cattle and dairy farming areas, but there is still plenty of native forest amidst the cultivation. Borinquen is an amazing sight from the property gate as you approach - like a small but carefully planned village with extensive green parks between each dwelling. It is comprised of individual tile-roofed bungalows that are privately placed amidst the gardens and pathways of the property. On the lower areas lie the main reception and restaurant buildings. The geothermic-heated pool area below them is particularly well-designed and the resort's most unusual features are the large wooden steaming and sauna cabins, set over the bubbling volcanic mud pools. Wooden pathways and small bridges connect the various features of the "active" area, and trails lead off in several directions into the forest. Bird song fills the air and you always know you are not far from the hot rocks below your feet. If you do not wish to walk, golf carts will take you from your villa to the other featured elements of this well-designed and gracious hotel. The restaurant is first-class and features local beef from nearby ranches and fresh fish from the sea not far away. Tidy stables house your mounts should you wish to ride on trails and open range land. In short, its is a very comfortable way to sample the volcanic wonders, see bird and animal life in the adjacent forests, and play at being a gaucho - all the while enjoying fabulous vistas and brilliant sunsets. Being on the lee side of the volcano, the rainfall is sporadic and unlikely to interfere with your enjoyment of the natural splendours that high-altitude Costa Rica has to offer. Various day-tours by foot, horse, ATV, and even canopy-wire are available.

Notes
This hotel is set in a natural wonderland - a green park-like setting on the slopes of a slumbering volcano. Many excursions are available through the tropical rain forest and working cattle country surrounding this luxurious resort. It offers very private and comfortable accommodation and excellent food. Tours utilize horses or ATVs to waterfalls, canopy wires, the volcano crater, and through forests full of wildlife. The most remarkable feature is the natural hot springs and their constructed pools and steam rooms. A new spa spanning a stream in the nearby forest openned July 2005.
