Reception closes 8pm, lower security gate closes 11pm. A 10% non-refundable deposit will be taken by Inns en Route at the time of confirming your reservation. The remaining 90% will be taken by the hotel 15 days before arrival date. Set on the slopes of the active Arenal volcano, the 37-room Arenal Observatory Lodge is a perfect spot to sample the rainforest experience. The Lodge's philosophy is one of active conservation and they have no neighbours to spoil the natural environment here. The 870 acre property lies within the National Park and borders the Monteverde Cloud Forest reserve, so it is surrounded with wilderness. The facilities are varied and separated for quiet privacy and since the accommodations are spread over such a large area, there is no sense of crowding. The dining room commands fabulous views of the volcano slopes above and of Lake Arenal below. It takes rain to make a proper rainforest, and the magnificent 1600m high active volcano catches the tradewind clouds and squeezes the Atlantic moisture from them. Even though this area receives 240 inches of rain per year (4 times that of Seattle), the mountain peak is clearly visible 50% of the time as the rain comes in heavy squalls followed by clear periods. The trees are enormous and the tropical forest supports a tremendous variety of bird and animal life. Guides are recommended for your hiking trips, as they are able to point out creatures that you might otherwise not see.
