The Hotel Buena Vista has exactly that – a good view. Overlooking the Central Valley of San Jose, this 25-room Mediterranean-style hotel is located in a small mountain village above Alajuela, the San Jose airport town only 9 km away. If business appointments or a desire to see museums and city lights do not compel you to stay in San Jose, this is an excellent alternative for a restful day or two before or after your overseas flight. You will enjoy views of the nearby coffee plantations and distant Poas volcano from the garden, and the intimate pool is a fine spot to cool off and catch up on your reading during the heat of the day. Being at high altitude, the nights are delightfully cool and a stroll through the local village in the evening may find you at a small restaurant, should you wish a change from the fine cuisine presented by the hotel. Breakfast is included, a common feature of Costa Rican hospitality, and the helpful staff can arrange various tours from this base. The free airport shuttle will permit you to avoid the busy city completely, yet you are still handy to everything the San Jose valley has to offer. Some rooms have balconies from which to enjoy the views, and the huge and bright bougainvillea hedge in the garden will brighten your day! Fresh fruit is always served with breakfast, and the hotel's dining room is open to the public until 10pm. There is also a gift shop and tour operator in the lobby.

Set amidst coffee plantations in a small village, the Buena Vista is well out of the city, and part way to the volcanic attractions. It is a good place to start or end your Costa Rica adventures.
